We wanted to have a cohesive visual style to the game, which meant having either just one artist or having several artists following the same aesthetic. We've reached out to some people about making art for the game, but are still waiting for their response. As you can imagine this is quite the undertaking.
Regardless, we love all art, and even if your artwork itself ends up not being used, I am sure the ideas for character and creature design might still transition to the game.
Another thing to consider is there is still a lot more art to the game other than just character and enemy design. We need UI, buttons, equipment, and map art. All examples of those are just as welcome.
P.S.: Special shout out for anyone what wants to try their hand at creating a great UI with strong basis on design theory and ergonomics. Your help would be really welcome.

Your help would be really welcome. What does that mean, exactly?

People who actually have a background in graphic design/ergonomics, whether that be from school or prior experience. This does not include thinking you know what you're doing just because.
