This is purely something I've created after months of thought.
I know it's rough.
The magical force is called Ether.
Everything possesses Ether to some degree, but usually only living things possess Ether signatures.
There are two types of Ether signatures, one denoting the type of living thing an entity is and the personal one for the thing in question.
Only people are said to have personal signatures.
Ether is a natural force predominantly (the sun sheds a large a large amount upon the earth), but relics of of old civilizations (and the sites themselves) possess large amounts as well. There are ley-lines too. Objects can be infused with Ether by an experienced practitioner; the most receptive to such practice are certain metals, like mythril or adamantine, and crystals or gems.
People can be infused with Ether as well, but such is highly dangerous, not to mention forbidden.
The ability to cast magic is a thing that is determined by the individual's brain structure. There is no other way.
When the person is in question is young they begin to manipulate the world world around them inadvertently, and then then when they're old enough, they are immediately sent to a special school set up by the Duchess.
Having a large amount Ether is not correspondent to having magical ability. Even if you're born with the smallest amount of Ether, you can use magic if your brain is structured properly. However, individuals possessing large amounts of Ether tend to develop other powers like kinesis or telepathy, or become physically/mentally stronger. Or they grow to large sizes.
I previously said casting magic was limited to a select group, but some advanced scientific societies have developed "magi-tech", a device replicating conventional magic through Ether-infused stones (which are also manufactured). The device drains Ether from the stone to cast, but it can also drain the energy from other stuff and the air, but it takes much longer. However, individuals possessing large quantities of Ether can also attach the device to themselves; a living battery; making them high demand in certain institutions.
Regardless casting magic is a test of mental strength, whether you have the brain for it or not. Continual shaping can lead to splitting headaches and mental fatigue n either case, and overreaching your limits will cause a brain anuerism, and draining Ether from yourself has numerous undesirable side effects.
