During our world building sessions, we had a couple of ideas for the desert town, and the participants were split between two main decisions for it's origins story and aesthetics. - Old West Town: Some people suggested to go with what we had previously, a recent town made up of people that left the central land to cross the desert in search of a brighter future, as Karthund was ravaged by famine. Not finding much being the endless sands of the Nahaaran desert, the people settled around an oasis, that despite the desolate environment all around, was still more fertile than Staphshire itself. Forming a community, and living in somewhat socialist terms for years, people started changing as the plague started taking effect and filling their minds with voracious hunger. Nowadays, society has all but collapsed, living in an state of anarchy where the strongest rules, and the weaker are prey.
- Arab Nomads: In the session, the idea of a group of arab nomads roaming the desert from oasis to oasis came to be. It would follow a similar aesthetic and cultural basis of real world desert societies, like the Tuareg and Sahrawi people( Of course no direct mention to the islamic religion nor the actual arabic culture should be made, just inspiration). In Karthund, they would have settled and thrived in the desert for centuries, first as part of the Karthundian Realm, then as an individual group until the inception of the plague.
So, tell you what you think, and lets decide on this as a group!

Does it necessarily have to be one or the other? Couldn't you have a bunch of nomads deciding to help out a load of refugees?

Does it necessarily have to be one or the other? Couldn't you have a bunch of nomads deciding to help out a load of refugees? The thematic conflict that would involve. And the difficulty of writing two completely different people. But mainly the thematic conflict.

No real thematic conflict, the refugees adopt enough of the nomad's ways to survive, but instead of being nomadic they're sedentary.

I meant that the existence of the nomads makes absolutely no difference to the thematic conflict found in the region. When you are writing a story, either something helps the plot or it doesn't. If it doesn't do anything to it, it just becomes noise and effectively makes the plot needlessly more complicated. We shouldn't add stuff just because we can. We should add stuff that makes for a better game, and a better story.

It would explain why some things are similar to other cities, while others are different.
I suppose in that case, I'll go for Arab Nomads.
